Example was Graham’s own apparel brand. In the spring of 2016 he drew its wordmark, a bold lowercase example with a sharp x, after a page of studies in different weights and cuts. He mocked up the first caps and a beanie with it and built a simple holding page for the website.

In 2017 he built out the line, made to order through Printful: snapbacks and five-panel caps with a small state outline embroidered in old-gold thread (Oregon, New York, California and eleven more), a beach blanket printed with a lawn inside an orange border, and a T-shirt that reads “I’m only competitive when there’s competition.” He also made a round mark that folds the e and the x together, and a printed label with the wordmark and madebyexample.com.
