Submarine was Graham’s idea for a dating app built around short videos. In May 2015 he wrote out its features and designed the iPhone screens. On the home screen you swipe yes or no through a deck of profiles. Each shows the person’s top five photos or videos, with video encouraged, and counts of the videos, photos and Instagram posts you can see once you connect.
Conversations are ranked into new, favorited and all. The record screen has a seven-second timeline, and a video sent in a chat is deleted as soon as it is sent. Your own profile, filled in from Facebook with an Instagram feed linked, leads to discovery settings (distance, age, gender, height and hashtags), stars and stats for your videos and photos, and account preferences, where the logout button reads “I’m off the market.”
