At EyeCue Lab, Graham designed the screens of Brio, a phone app with a coach in it: a cheerful yellow star with big eyes, who talks you through everything in speech bubbles. “Hello. I’m Brio!” it begins. “I’m your personal motivational coach, I’ve been sent to help you feel all the good feels.”

After four welcome screens, you sign up with Spotify or an email address, while the star turns around so it won’t peek. You pick an eye color and a username for your avatar, and the dashboard greets you (“Howdy, KD! You look great today!”) above three areas, each in its own color: Music in mint, Exercise in lilac and Social in mustard. Each area holds three small steps, marked done with a double tap, from “Do you know how to make a playlist?” to a one-mile jog, 25 sit-ups, a postcard to someone you know and telling the barista at a coffee shop that you like their shirt. A check-in screen shows the last time you checked in on each.
